Recently, I took some time to spray weed killer on those ugly weeds that grow in the many cracks of our parking lot. I do this job once a week for about thirty minutes. But I had gone way too long without spraying, and it really got ahead of me. I had to use six gallons of Roundup to kill all the weeds and unwanted grass.
While I was shooting my pesky enemies I thought about my own soul. It’s really easy to let the weeds get into the tiny cracks in our character. Our insecurities, fears, lusts, and misunderstanding of the gospel create little cracks that weeds sneak into and exploit. Left unchecked we get the same situation I faced with the six gallons of weed killer, an emotional crash. As I finished the job I vowed to weekly take a walk around the parking lot and kill the weeds. I also vowed weekly shower my own soul with the grace of God. We can do this at Communion, confessing sins to trusted people, daily devotions, contemplative prayer, through deep praises, and many other ways. Inevitably weeds will break through the cracks, sometimes where we least expect, but God has given us everything we need to kill every kind of weed.
“Make every effort to live in peace with all men and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord. See to it that no one misses the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many.” Hebrews 12:14-15
