Peace of Mind
This past Sunday, Doug Hon spoke from Philippians 4:4-7 on having the peace of God. We saw that although many people struggle with anxiety, the Bible speaks specifically to this issue and gives us clear instruction on how to overcome anxiety with the peace of God. Specifically, we saw from verses 6 and 7 that there are three things we can do in order to obey the command to “not be anxious about anything”.
Use the following points and related questions to reflect on how to apply the message to your life:
1. Prayer. Essentially prayer is offering your heart to God. In the midst of the situations and circumstances that may be producing anxiety in your life, are you pouring out your heart to God or are you hiding from His presence? Are you coming before God being completely honest, transparent and real before Him or are you coming to Him in a religious manner thinking that if you say the right things or use the right religious jargon He will be pleased with you?
2. Supplication. Supplication is making your needs known to God in humility and faith. It is requesting things of God recognizing that He is your source. When you come to talk with God are you talking to Him about specific situations, circumstances and needs you may have or do you find yourself only praying in generalities?
3. Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is reviewing what God has already done in your life and giving him thanks for it. Are you so consumed by your present circumstances that you have forgotten what God has done for you? Take a few minutes and review the specific things God has done for you (beginning with what Jesus did for you on the cross 2,000 years ago) and express how thankful you are to Him.
Finally, take some time to read and meditate on some additional scriptures Doug referenced (see below) and set aside some time this week to do exactly what God is His grace and wisdom instructs us to do in Philippians 4:4-7.
